The National Motor Museum’s travelling exhibition Motoring in Miniature – On Tour, is sharing nostalgic joy with shoppers in Portsmouth this Christmas, in its new temporary home in Cascades Shopping Centre.
The exhibition of toy and model cars, which was launched in the National Motor Museum in 2020, has now been adapted to go on tour, leaving Beaulieu for its first stop. The colourful display, capturing the joy and excitement of childhood play, from games and posters to roadways and toy vehicles, has been installed in a shop unit in the Portsmouth shopping centre, for passers-by to enjoy until spring 2022.
Spread across six windows on a busy corner of one of the shopping centre’s thoroughfares, the packed display showcases a wide selection of toy cars of all shapes and sizes – no matter if you are 5 or 95, you will know them as the toys of your childhood.
You can’t fail to spot the giant roadway, chock-a-block with toy cars of all ages, scales and designs, with much-loved favourite brands including Corgi, Dinky, Matchbox, Hot Wheels, Triang and many more. How many of these brightly coloured treasures are just like the toys you used to own, which were raced and crashed into the skirting boards?
A selection of toy garages, once the focal point of play for generations of youngsters, are on show in the colourful exhibition, along with motoring-themed games, puzzles and Scalextric layouts of different eras. Together, these playthings of yesteryear help to spread the word about the National Motor Museum Trust’s mission to engage and inspire people with the story of motoring through world class collections.
